The Bonum Ukraine Charitable Foundation has responded for the second time to a request from Ilya’s mum and helped to purchase special night-time contact lenses to correct his vision.
Ilya has type 1 diabetes. Last year, #Bonum had already helped the boy by purchasing a night lens for one eye. However, during a routine check-up, doctors noted a deterioration in his vision and recommended fitting lenses to both eyes to halt the progression of his short-sightedness.
Night-time lenses are a modern and safe method of vision correction known as orthokeratology. The child wears special lenses only at night, whilst during the day they can see clearly without glasses or daytime contact lenses. This is particularly important for children with diabetes, as it helps to avoid additional discomfort during the day.
Ilya currently has early-stage short-sightedness (-1.5 and -0.25 dioptres), but it is between the ages of 8 and 12 that myopia often progresses most rapidly. According to research, night-time lenses help slow the deterioration of vision by 50–60 per cent and reduce the risk of serious complications in the future.
We are delighted to have been able to support Ilya for a second time and help preserve his eyesight.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to every donor for supporting our Foundation. It is your donations that give children the chance to see the world in bright, clear colours, full of new possibilities.
The donation amount is non-refundable, and the funds are distributed among the foundation's projects
